Prom decorations and theme ideas

Updated April 17, 2017

Prom is an event that every student anticipates. The prom committee's most important job is to brainstorm a theme and decorations. A good prom theme will make the student body excited about the upcoming event. Decorations are crucial because they can add or detract from the atmosphere. Some prom theme ideas include Midsummer Night Garden, Hollywood and Paris at Night.

Midsummer Night Garden Theme

Create a romantic prom night with a Midsummer Night Garden theme. Rent or purchase garden trellises or arbors at party rental stores or gardening centres. Place them at the entrance and on the sides of the venue. Arrange artificial vines over trellises. Rent large water fountains to decorate the venue. This is an effective way to give the impression of being outdoors if your prom is at an indoor venue. Place small artificial vines over the fountains to make them blend into the decor. Rent garden benches and place them near arbors or trellises. Garden benches give guests places to rest and take photos. Use subtle lighting to achieve a romantic ambience. Recapture a starry midnight sky by arranging Christmas lights around the venue. Line the walls with dark paper and paint quotes from Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream."

A Hollywood prom theme gives guests a chance to experience glamour. Since students will be dressed to impress in tuxedos and prom dresses, decorate the prom as a red-carpet event. Rent an actual red carpet to place at the entrance of the venue. Couples can strut down the carpet and pose at the end to take pictures. Place strobe lights along the carpet to mimic the lights of paparazzi cameras. Decorate the inside of the venue with artificial palm trees. Line them on the sides of the venue so that promgoers will have room to dance. For the backdrop, have artistic students paint silhouettes of skyscrapers and the Hollywood Hill. Add black and silver balloons around the venue for a festive look. Instead of handing out crowns to the prom court, give imitation Oscar statuettes, which you can purchase at party rental stores.

Paris at Night

Recapture a night in Paris for a romantic prom theme. Paint a large mural of the Eiffel Tower and add gold glitter to mimic the Eiffel Tower's lights at night. Rent a garden arc to place at the entrance of the venue. Decorate the arc with artificial vines and Christmas lights. Create a path that goes from the entrance to the dance floor with dark butcher paper. Line the sides of the path with gold tulle. Place old-world style lampposts on either side of the path. You can find them at a party rental store.
