A sister-in-law is either the sister of your spouse, the wife of your brother or the wife of your spouse's brother. It isn't always someone you're very close to, so you may have a hard time figuring out a good gift for a birthday or Christmas. If you know your sister-in-law very well, it's best to go with what you know, but if you are not so sure, there are a couple of areas that are usually good go-to gifts.

There are gifts that almost all women like to get, and in most cases you can't go wrong with these kinds of presents. These items include candles, gift baskets, flowers, chocolate and clothing. If a guy is getting the present and considering clothing, it's best to let another lady pick out the item, and it shouldn't be anything too personal such as nightclothes.
This is a tricky one and isn't always a good idea, so you'll have to use your judgment. You don't want to get practical gifts for a spouse, but a sister-in-law is far enough removed that it might work out. You probably shouldn't get a vacuum cleaner or an iron, but maybe a coffee maker or something similar if you know she has a need for such an item.
If you have an enjoyable shared memory, use that to come up with some thoughtful ideas. Frame a picture from a memorable vacation and give it as a gift. Another idea might be something that reminds her of a shared good time, such as saltwater taffy reminiscent of a beach trip.
If you really have no idea what to get your sister-in-law, think of gift ideas that will be good for her whole family. Tickets to the movies, a restaurant gift card, or an offer to babysit while she and her husband go out might go over well.
