Daily or weekly dusting is an important part of keeping Venetian blinds clean. There are a number of tools that can be used to dust the blinds including a feather duster, cloth or a small vacuum attachment.
Open the blinds so that the slats are horizontal. The quickest way to clean any set of blinds is to start from the top and work down. This allows any excess dust to fall on the slats that have not been cleaned. It is important to remember to dust the other parts of the blind mechanism and the window sill.
A tip to keep the blinds dust free longer is to run a dryer sheet over the blinds. This will help repel the dust from the slats. -
At least once a year the Venetian blinds should be removed from the windows and cleaned with water and a mild detergent. Plastic and metal blinds can be soaked in the water for up to an hour. This can be done in a bathtub or in a large bucket outdoors. After soaking, rinse the blinds and let each set dry before putting it back up in the window.
Venetian blinds made from wood should not be soaked. Instead, lightly scrub the blinds with a damp cloth. Saturating the wood slats will cause warping and discoloration. Plastic and metal blinds can also be scrubbed this way for a faster cleaning than the soaking method. - Routine maintenance on the blinds is another way to keep Venetian blinds functional and looking great. Occasionally inspect the mechanics of the blinds to see if anything is sticking or not opening far enough. When cleaning the blinds, avoid aggressive scrubbing that can damage the slats. If one of the slats are bent too far, it may not be able to retain its original shape. If any of the Venetian blind slats are damaged, they can be replaced by removing the end caps, pulling the damaged slats off of the lifts cords, and replacing the damaged slat with new ones.
