How Much to Spend on a Wedding Present

Updated July 20, 2017

It can be difficult to decide how much to spend on a wedding present, especially when you are working within a budget. There are ways to tell how much to spend on an appropriate gift for the couple. These three ways will help you to determine exactly how much to spend on a wedding present.

Your Meal

It is a rule of thumb that you should spend as much money on a wedding present as the couple has spent on your meal for the wedding. This can be difficult to determine, but it is not impossible. If you know what the couple is serving for the meal and you know where they are holding the reception, then you can look at the website for the reception venue and find out just how much the meal costs. Then you can give a gift that is similar in cost to the meal that the couple will be providing for you.

Registry

If the couple has registered for wedding gifts, then it may be easy to just purchase a gift off of their wedding registry. This way you do not have to worry about exactly what is an appropriate amount to spend. If you look at the registry and only the more expensive items are left, then look at what has already been bought from the registry and see how much those items cost. You can buy comparable items and spend the same amount of money that other guests have spent on the couple.

Budget

Your budget is the most important thing to consider when deciding how much money to give as a wedding gift. While the above two options are good ways to determine the amount of the gift, you should not feel obligated to go too far outside your comfort zone in order to give a larger gift. However, if you have the means, then you may want to give the couple a larger gift in order to help them out in starting their new life together.
