A sore tongue, also known as stomatitis or glossodynia, is common for some people. While a sore tongue can be painful, it is often not a serious problem. Before you make a trip to the doctor, try some home remedies.
A sore tongue can be caused by a vitamin B-complex deficiency. Another reason may be overuse of an antibiotic. To keep from irritating the sore tongue, avoid using medicines such as aspirins, mouthwashes, lozenges, chewing gum, and spicy and citrus foods.
You may also have irregularly shaped teeth or plaque in your mouth that is causing the tongue to brush up against it when eating. Other causes are rubbing your tongue against your teeth, usually when anxious about something. Eating too much sugar may also cause a sore tongue. Biting the tongue is common and sometimes it is sore until the tongue is fully healed. Smoking also causes the tongue to be more sensitive over time.

Cures for a Sore Tongue
To give your mouth some relief, try different remedies. Try them for about a week and if there is no change or if the problem gets worse, then see a doctor. For temporary relief, gargle with a benadryl elixir, which you can get at most drugstores. If you have a vitamin B deficiency, take a multivitamin daily. Try using a toothbrush with softer bristles. This may help with the irritation and put less pressure on your tongue and gums when brushing. Use a baking soda mixture to relieve the pain of a sore tongue. Mix 1/2 tsp of baking soda in a glass of warm water and gargle this solution every half hour. If you still have a sore tongue that may not be healing, you might have a more serious problem and should visit your dentist.
