While most of us would love to have a "Fabulous 40" party thrown in our honour, the truth is most friends would rather pull 40th birthday pranks. The mark of a true gentleman or woman is in how you receive and react to these fun, if often silly, pranks. Credit your friends for caring enough to think them through and act them out.

Birthday Sign

Call a local sign company and rent a large, backlit sign on wheels that you can put your own, customised message on. Park it in the birthday person's front yard and plug it in so they come home to it, and the surprise party waiting inside. If you don't have a company nearby, stop at a business that uses one and ask if you might rent theirs.

Year-of-Their-Birth Surprise Party

Surprise the birthday person, not only with a surprise party, but a party where everyone wears clothing or costumes exemplifying the year they were born, or the years they were in high school. Coordinate with matching decorations and music from the era. Have a simple outfit available if the person having the birthday wants to blend in and have fun with the prank too. Take it one more step, if desired, with gifts depicting the time frame and his yearbook picture blown up extra large.

Embarrassing Cards

In lieu of gifts, have each guest at the birthday party detail their most embarrassing, or funny, memory involving the person celebrating their birthday, in a card. Have a big notice board set up on an easel and pin each card to the cork board after it is opened, to share with all the guests.

Happy Birthday to You

Have a friend that is up for fun, dress up as one of the birthday girl's favourite singers and make a big spectacular out of singing Happy Birthday to her. The more over the top the better, with costumes and musical instruments. Have all the guests play along with it and be sure to videotape the event for posterity.

Champagne Toast

Champagne toasts are always the mark of a monumental occasion. Pour a glass of champagne for all your guests and have each one in turn offer up a toast to the birthday boy. However, in lieu of a normal toast have each one finish the phrase, "The funniest or most embarrassing thing that ever happened to me while with "birthday boy's name" was." Continue around the entire room relating stories of hilarious memories, while making new ones.

This is Your Life

Act out a version of "This is Your Life" during the birthday party, with the help of all your friends in attendance. Before the party ask guests to recall the most memorable occasion or event that they experienced with the person celebrating her birthday. Select a number of them and ask the guests involved to act out the occasion during a "spontaneous" and hilarious progression of skits depicting the life of the guest of honour. This can be anything from dressing the part and acting it out to having those involved simply walk through the recreated memory with those at the party. A few well-placed props may be all you need. You can have a stand-in for the birthday girl to get the full effect, while she sits back and takes it all in.
