A den is a room in the house that's similar to the living room but is usually smaller and used more informally. The room may have a door to keep it separate from the other rooms in the house. It may be used for activities such as playing cards and board games, watching television, reading or just relaxing. Make your den warm, cosy and inviting by decorating it at little or no cost at all.

Walls and Flooring
Depending on the brand, you can purchase a gallon of paint fairly inexpensively. Warm colours on the walls would be appropriate to keep the den nice and cosy, such as rich shades of burgundy, forest green or even navy blue. Wallpaper with prints in these colours or plaid wallpaper also adds a nice touch and will make the room appear smaller. To keep it inexpensive, you can choose to wallpaper one wall instead of all the walls in the room and make that side of the room the den's focal point.
In a den, you should choose furniture that's comfortable and less casual than you would in a living room. A reclining chair would be appropriate in the den. Move a piece from another room or check out local sales. If you'll be playing games in the den, you may want to place a large table here. You don't need expensive chairs to go around the table as you can find nice and affordable folding chairs in different colours and made from different materials. Most important of all, your budget can be kept low by decorating with furniture that serves a double purpose such as storage ottomans, where you can keep things like board games and toys.
Place two or three small lamps in the den for accent lighting and to keep different parts of the room dim as needed. If you have flooring other than carpet in the den, place an area rug in the room. You can also include another seating option by adding large floor pillows or bean bags, which are also inexpensive. To add a little life to a dark den, place a nice potted plant in the corner of the room or a vase full or flowers from your garden -- which costs nothing at all -- on a table. Displaying your books and magazines in an organised manner can also be part of the accessories in your den.
