Fixing the pull chain and light switch on a ceiling fan requires, among other things, a tool called a circuit tester. Repair a ceiling fan's new pull chain and light switch with help from an electrical repair specialist in this free video clip.
Hi, this is Ron Duncan with House to Home, and today I'm going to show you how to repair a ceiling fan's pull chain and light switch. The tools that we'll need for this project will be a circuit tester, wire strippers, a Phillips Screwdriver, two wire nuts and a replacement pull chain with a switch. The first thing we need to do is to disconnect the power and in this case it's at the wall switch. The next thing I'm going to do is to remove the light switch canopy and there are three screws and I'm removing the canopy and the next thing that I want to do is these two lead wires is what's connecting the canopy. I'm going to do most of this work on the ground, so I'm just going to disconnect these two. Okay I've put the light canopy on a different stand so I could work better so what I'm going to remove, this is the piece here. In order to remove this piece, I have to unscrew this and take the piece out. This is the piece that I'll be replacing. All I'm going to do is follow these two leads, one and two. The new piece comes with just two leads. I'm going to cut this and cut this. I'm going to strip the wire that I just cut with my strippers, twist them because it's stranded wire. I'm going to strip the other one, twist them because it's stranded wire and I'm ready to install my new piece. So here's the new pull chain and switch. I'm going to put the lead through the opening. I'm going to tighten it down with my piece that came with it, pull the pull chain through there and I'm ready to connect the leads that I cut off. So I'm simply going to go, it doesn't matter in this case, they're both black. I'm going to take my black to one area that I cut off, twist the two wires together and apply the wire nut. I'm going to do the same with the other one, twist the two together and apply the wire nut. And now we have just replaced the pull chain and the switch. So now I'm ready to install and it's white to white and these are quick connectors and they snap in and black to black and they snap in and now I'm ready to reinstall my canopy with the three screws.
