Hi, my name is Athena Haas, and I work here at Novak's. And I'm going to show you how to clean and recure a cast iron skillet. So, in this case, this is an old cast iron pan that hasn't been used in years. And because it was stored in a garage, it's got some rust from damp conditions. Cast iron should always be kept dry and oiled. Water is very damaging to cast iron pans. So, the first thing you want to do to clean this kind of pan is put some oil in the pan. Today, I am using salt, but you could also use baking soda. I've got a nylon scrubby, and I'm going to use that to just take off any kind of old rust. And you could also do this in the sink, you could also do this with hot water. It's really all about elbow grease and scrubbing. And already I've been able to get some of this stuff off. So now, I'm going to go ahead and wipe it out. And at this point you can take it to the sink and rinse it out. But to dry it you want to either put it in the oven or put it on the stove till it's completely dry. So, the final step after you take it out of the oven, oil it. Let it cool in a safe place on the counter till it's cool to the touch. And that was how to clean and recure a cast iron skillet.
