Once you learn how to work with fondant icing you can roll it out, knead it like bread and sculpt in into all manner of fun shapes. A bakery professional demonstrates in this free video on cake decorations.
Hi, I'm Janna, and we are at Granite Bakery on the corner of 900 East and 2700 South in Salt Lake City, Utah. We're a full line professional retail bakery, make everything from pie to breads to cookies, but our specialty is cake, birthday cake and wedding cake. And today, we're going to talk a little bit about some of the products that we use here at the bakery, butter cream fondant, things that can make a cake look great. When we use fondant, we like to keep everything soft and fresh. We do make our own fondant here at the bakery and so it's a little bit different than fondant you buy at a store but in order to use fondant you have to have a good smooth surface so that your fondant doesn't stick. You're going to need a rolling pin and anything that you want to use to decorate a cake, cookie cutters, candy, there are a lot of things that you can use to make fondant. We knead fondant like bread and then we roll it out with a rolling pin and then we apply it to the cake kind of like a blanket. Fondant is icing, but it's more like candy. Fondant is used to cover cakes. We also use it to make flowers, polka dots, dots, stripes, fondant bows. We can use it to sculpt. We can turn it into small animals, people. Fondant has many, many uses. It's especially great for wedding cakes that are going to be outdoor in the Summer because then you don't have to worry about your cake melting. Again, I am Janna with Granite Bakery and Bridal Showcase in Salt Lake City, Utah, and we've just learned and talked about how to use fondant.
