Hi, my name is Tricia Trinque, and I'm a physical therapist with Seabreeze Physical Therapy, and today we're going to be talking about how to heal a herniated disc with exercise. The materials that we'll utilizing today is an exercise ball on the floor. Today we're going to be doing an exercise to help stabilize the spine area following the herniation of a disc. It's very important that we strengthen and stabilize the muscles of the back area. And in order to do this, we're utilizing an exercise ball to give added stability to the core structures of the body. So what we're going to start with to get some strength is to have Michelle reach the front arm forward holding in this position for a count of five to strengthen the upper back muscles while her spine is kept in a nice neutral position with the assistance of the exercise ball. The next exercise after she relaxes the arm down, is to raise the leg of the opposite side just to hip level and not above, again, keeping a nice, smooth neutral spine, not bouncing, holding nice and steady for a count of five, relaxing down. Good, and then she will do the opposite arm, because we want to get nice, strengthened stabilization of each area. Holding for five, and relaxing. And then opposite leg, holding for five, and relaxing. And this helps to give good strength and stabilization in neutral spine to the back muscles following a disc herniation.
