Shortening a dress is a simple process of measuring up the desired length, marking the hem with pins, folding up the fabric at the pins and sewing a hem down with a sewing machine. Trim and hem a dress or skirt that is too long with a demonstration from an eco-friendly fashion designer in this free video on making clothes.
Hi, I'm Tolly Moseley, and I'm Rene Geneva, and you can check us out at EcoChicClothing.com. So every time I buy a dress, Rene, it's too long, because I'm really short. So, I'd love it if you could show me how to shorten a dress. And I have the same problems, and it's easy. So, to shorten a dress, you basically need pins, a measuring tape, and a sewing machine. Now, if you have to shorten it more than a couple of inches, you're going to want to add your friend, the scissors. So we're going to shorten this dress one inch, and with our measuring tape, we're going to measure one inch up and put a pin at that inch. Now, if you're good at eyeballing, you can eyeball it from there. If you're not, you can just pin around one inch. And when you're done with that, you're going to want to fold at the pins. When you're done putting your pins around at an inch with the dress, then you fold at the pin. And take it out and put it back in vertically. Now that's a little sewer's trick as well. So you do that all the way around. And then you're ready to put it on the machine. From here, we're going to sew the hem down. So we put it in the machine, and just start going. And the fact that we put in our pins in vertically, you can sew completely over them and take them out at the back end. So now you have the same dress, but it's one inch shorter. What do you think? Rene, my dresses are going to be so much more flattering now I know how to shorten them to the correct length.
