Hi I'm Dr. Mike Glasmeier of First Impressions Family Dentistry in Nashville, Tennessee and today we'll be discussing alternatives to straightening teeth without braces. The materials used to accomplish teeth straightening without braces would involve some sort of clear retainer that is rigid such as Clear Correct or Invisalign. Retainers are some sort of appliance that will go in and out of the mouth to help facilitate the movements of teeth. They have been traditionally in the past for retaining positions which is why they are called a retainer but they have been redesigned so they can actually produce very gentle movements on the teeth to create a controlled environment that teeth can be moved without the use of traditional metal and wire braces. Invisalign is one example of a very rigid clear retainer system that can be utilized to help straighten teeth without the need for traditional orthodontics. To get Invisalign you have to see an Invisalign-certified dentist who has been trained in prescribing these and it essentially is a clear retainer that can be used over the course of one to two years to help move the teeth. Again it is a clear retainer so it can't be seen while you are wearing it and it is very very good at controlling tooth movements and is very aesthetic and pleasing. Another way of straightening teeth is through using veneers or crowns. Veneers and crowns are restorations that are used to help reshape and refit teeth to help them look more appropriately fitting. You can alter the way that they look in terms of length, shape and most importantly alignment so what you're doing is you're not really straightening the teeth but you are creating a false illusion to everyone else that they are straight when in fact they are not but it's a great way to reshape and re-lengthen teeth and these are just a few ways one can straighten their teeth without using traditional orthodontics.
