"Hi, I'm Dr. Laura Grashow; a Licensed Psychologist with drgrashow.com. Okay, so let's talk about suffering from depression while pregnant. This is a complicated issue. It's not only involving the woman's mental health, but also the health of her unborn child. So what really requires coordinated care between psychiatrist, possibly a mental health worker or a psychologist and the obstetrician. All three should be involved and should be communicating so that the best possible treatment is given. For mild depression, therapy may really work best and women who are pregnant who are suffering from a mild depression really might want to opt for therapy alone because there's real consideration to weighing the risks of medication versus the benefits especially when you're pregnant. For moderate, more moderate to severe depression, I would really recommend a discussion with a psychiatrist; again, to talk about weighing the benefits of and versus risks of medication. But again, there should be a coordinated effort between mental health, psychiatry and obstetrician."
