Hello, my name is Doctor Stephen Mandy and I am a dermatologist associated with South Beach Dermatology in Miami Beach, Florida. Let's talk a little bit about remedies for spots on the face. This is a common problem, particularly in women and very annoying. It sometimes occurs in men associated with age but more frequently it's women associated with hormonal changes such as pregnancy or birth control pills. In women it generally occurs across the cheekbones, over the nose, center of the forehead and across the upper lip, most annoying to women because it looks like a mustache. When these changes occur the first and most important thing is sunblock because they will get worse in the sun. So if you want any help at all with improving, you must use daily sunblock. There are a variety of over-the-counter bleaches that many companies have such as Olay makes various products for color removal. There are many others on the market and your local pharmacy can guide you to those. There are also much more potent prescription products that we have available in dermatology office. And then there are laser and light based treatments which we can use in association with the bleaching creams. Also creams that are more familiar to people as retinoids, retin A and so forth also tend to lighten these problems. But I can not reiterate enough that the most important thing is blocking the sun. Because no matter how much you use in the way of bleach, no matter how much laser based treatments you have, you can re-darken the spots immediately with on exposure to the sun without proper effective sun block. With people who do not have the hormone variety of pigmentation change but rather what is called commonly liver spots or age spots, those are usually remediable only by laser based or light based technologies that we have available in dermatology offices.
