"Hi my name is Charlotte Skiles. I am a nutrition consultant and clinical herbalist with Eat in Peace Wellness Consulting located in Austin, Texas. And the question I'll be answering right now is what is taurine? Taurine, T A U R I N E is an amino acid. And amino acids perform a number of functions in the body, I don't even think we can begin to understand all of the functions that amino acids can perform. Some amino acids the body makes and some we have to have from food that our bodies cannot make so they're considered essential amino acids. Taurine is used in the production of bile in body. Bile is a substance produced by the liver and stored by the gall bladder that aids the digestion of fats. It acts like a soap, it emulsifies, it takes large fat globules and makes them smaller so that enzymes called lipases can then act on that fat. So taurine is also associated with the cardiovascular system and mood stabilization. So that's a little bit about what taurine is."
