Hello, my name is Dr. Jack Shohet, and I'm going to explain what a perforated eardrum is. A perforated eardrum is a hole in the eardrum. The eardrum is a very thin structure, that separates the ear canal, from the space from the middle ear, and it helps transmit sound to your inner ear. A hole can be created in the eardrum, by trauma, such as a Q-tip in the ear. It can be caused by infection, or it can be caused surgically. It's also important to rule out causes that may be harmful to you, and so that may be part of the workup as well, depending on where you end up starting. The first thing you may want to do, is get a hearing test, by a professional, and see a physician, that specializes in working these problems up.
