From racing bike saddles to comfort seats, learn all about bicycle seats/saddles in this free cycling video.
This is Jim Toledano for Expert Village and we’re going to talk bike seats, or bike saddles as they’re called. This bike has a basic rode bike saddle. This one has gel in it, as you can see. The purpose of it is to give you a comfortable ride for whatever kind of biking you’re doing. There are over 500 different designs of bike saddle because everybody is build differently and needs a different kind of padding. Racing bike saddles are very thin and very hard. If you’re not used to them and if you try and spend a long time in them, they’re extremely uncomfortable. Comfort saddles, which are much wider and more padded are used for basic biking around town and they’re basically a big cushion that you’re riding on. You can also buy additional padding for bikes. It just slides over the nose of the bike and you’ve got a lot more padding. What you want to get is as little padding as you’re comfortable with. The more of a cushion you’re sitting on, the more you’re going to rock back and forth on the bike. Again, that uses momentum, it uses energy; it’ll cause your biking to be less efficient. If your saddle is too hard it’s going to hurt and you’re going to be uncomfortable. Saddles come in all kinds of widths. This is a relatively narrow saddle because I’m built that way. Other people are much more comfortable with a saddle that considerably wider. Buying a saddle is a very personal thing. If you’re on a bike, you and your saddle have become real good friends immediately and you’ve got to stay that way. Don’t let anybody tell you that there’s a particular kind of saddle that you should have. Don’t choose a saddle because it looks nice or because it has nice colors or designs on it. Your saddle has to be matched up to you so that you’re comfortable on it so you can sit on it, so you can ride efficiently and comfortably on it and not get off the bike and wished you hadn’t done it. Sometimes you will find that you spend a little bit too much time on your bike and you’re sore. Some of the problems with biking are chafing because the inside of your leg is rubbing because your leg is going up and down. There are a number of different lotions and creams that you can use inside your bike shorts in order to elevate the problem to make it slide a little bit and to make it not be so uncomfortable.
