"When using the elliptical trainer, as with any other piece of cardiovascular equipment, it's always a good idea to start with a couple minute warm-up; very low resistance, very low incline. This allows your muscles to get warmed up and your blood to flow through the body. Once you're sufficiently warmed up, you can increase the resistance and/or the cross ramp for a workout of your choosing. One of the great things about a workout on an elliptical trainer as oppose to a treadmill is that while you're burning fat, you're also building muscle in your legs, whether in the glutes, quadriceps, hamstrings or calves. Once a person feels comfortable using the elliptical trainer, they can intensify the workout by removing the hands from the handles and pumping their arms as if they're were running. This will intensify the workout and burn more calories at the same time."
