To hook up a monitor to a laptop, find the external video port on your laptop. Connect your monitor to your laptop using a 15-pin cable with help from an IT specialist in this free video on laptop computers.
Hi, my name is Chris Dowdy with Orange Star Networks, and I'm here to explain how to hook up an external monitor to your laptop. First thing you need to do is find the external video port on your laptop. Generally this is a small, blue 15-pin connector, which should have either the word "video," or perhaps even a symbol indicating a small screen next to it. Once you've located that, plug in your monitor, or even an external device, such as your television or a video projector, into that port using a male-to-male 15-pin cable. This cable should come with your monitor or sometimes with your projector. Once you've plugged your device in and you have it powered up, find the function key on your keyboard that indicates that it will toggle between video modes on your laptop and your external device. Once you've found that key, you'll select it by toggling through it in several modes. The first mode will be just your laptop. The second time you hit the key will be your laptop and your external device, and the third time will be just your external device and your laptop screen will be black. Once you've selected the mode you want to operate in, release the key and as you begin using your laptop, you'll see your display working properly on your external monitor. My name is Chris Dowdy. I'm with Orange Star Networks, and that's how to hook up an external monitor to your laptop.
