Foods that are dangerous for dogs

Dogs are said to be man’s best friend, but we do not always treat them in such a way. A lot of people do not have enough money to provide them with the right food and the balanced diet they need. Some people feed their pets with food that could be bad for them, without even knowing it. Foods that are common and healthy for humans to eat can cause health problems or even death for dogs. You should take into account that the intake of these banned foods depends on the size of the animal, as the bigger they are, the more they would have to eat for the consumption to affect them.


This tasty treat is a favourite for many, but it is not for dogs. Chocolate is one of those foods which can be fatal for your pet. It contains theobromine, a chemical that causes the heart to beat faster, giving a shock to the central nervous system of the animal.

Little bones

You should never give your dog little bones, such as those from poultry or rabbits, as they can be very dangerous. If your dog is given a little bone to play with, the most likely outcome is that it will get stuck in its throat. This can cause a great deal of damage and could even lead to emergency surgery to have the bone removed. For this reason, make sure that the only bones your dog uses are those that are designed for them.


For dogs, this vegetable is the most harmful of all because it contains disulfides. These cause damage to their red blood cells, which in turn cause the dog to suffer from a lack of oxygen and anemia. Eating onion can also result in your dog suffering from liver problems, breathing difficulties, dermatitis and discoloured urine. It could even lead to a rapid death for some dogs. Garlic can also produce the same harmful effects as onion.


Although some people have the habit of giving milk to their pets, they should know that dogs are actually lactose intolerant. Dogs do not have the correct enzymes necessary to break down the lactose, which is a type of sugar found in dairy products. Thus milk can cause various stomach problems such as diarrhea, vomiting and gastroenteritis.


This fruit seems inoffensive to most people but it can cause lots of problems for your dog. Its consumption in large amounts can cause intoxication leading to kidney problems. The toxicity of grapes is specifically related to their seeds which are very harmful for dogs.

Ham and salted meats

Ham and salted meats can cause you dog to suffer from obesity because of their fat content. Their high salt content also means they can cause your dog to have stomach upsets and pancreatitis.


Alcohol should be left for you and your friends. Do not even think about giving your pet a cocktail. Alcohol is extremely bad for dogs as they get quickly intoxicated and can become nervous and aggressive. A large amount of alcohol would eventually affect their central nervous system, causing heart and breathing difficulties.


The avocado is a food that is very high in fats as much for people as for pets. Its pulp, seed and skin contain persin, a dervitive of fatty acids that is extremely toxic for dogs and other animals. It can cause vomiting and diarrhea in your dog.


The consumption of this dried fruit can cause severe damage to the kidney of your dog. This can lead to kidney failure which would cause great sickness to your dog. The harmful effects of raisins are greater in puppies than in older dogs.


Caffeine is very harmful because of the methylxanthines that are found in the seeds of the cocoa bean and in the fruit of the plant that produces coffee. Its consumption would cause your dog to suffer from diarrhea, vomiting, excessive thirst, panting and hyperactivity.
