Beyond your wedding dress: What to wear

Updated April 17, 2017

Although “the dress” is a crucial part of a wedding, it's easy to forget the photo-worthy moments that come along the way. From the proposal to the altar, eHow UK's style guide will have you looking your best for all of your pre-wedding planning and festivities.

Engagement party

Don’t be afraid to make a statement with a bright dress -- after all, the party is for you and your fiance. Take a cue from Hayden Panettiere who looked classy and age appropriate in this red cocktail dress at the premiere of The Weinstein Company's "Scream 4” in 2011.

Wedding planner meet-up

Show your wedding planner that you're serious about planning your wedding, in a form-flattering pencil skirt. Host Emma Stone wore a sophisticated pencil skirt with a black long sleeve top at the Worldwide Orphans Foundation Annual Benefit Gala 2011. In this business casual attire, Stone looks ready to take on the world.

Engagement pictures

For your engagement pictures it’s important to wear something classic that you won’t look back on as a terrible fashion decision. Think simple and classic when it comes to engagement photos. Looking feminine and flirty in this little black dress, Leighton Meester promotes Herbal Essences in Madrid back in 2010.

The search for a venue

When searching for a venue, keep your outfit comfortable but trendy, like Whitney Port’s adorable pale pink romper that she wore to the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic in 2011. Don’t forget your sunglasses and sunscreen if looking at outdoor venues.

Bridal boot camp

With a wedding coming up, your workout routines are sure to increase. Jessica Biel’s outfit at the EIF Revlon Run/Walk for Women in 2011 is perfect for your own bridal boot camp. Sign up for local races benefiting a good cause to keep you motivated and goal-orientated.

Cake tasting

Put your wedding diet on hold for the day and wear something loose-fitting while cake tasting like Shailene Woodley’s beige and black dress worn at The Hollywood Reporter's Annual Next Generation Reception in 2011. Don’t forget to keep your portions small and try a little bit of everything.

Floral dreaming

Why not wear floral to the florist? Rachel Bilson looks trendy with her bright red pants and floral top worn at The CW & Showtime's TCA Party in 2011. The chic touch we love? Her cheetah print shoes are to die for.

Say yes to the dress

When looking for your wedding dress, it doesn’t hurt to let everyone know that you’re the bride. Wear white like Minka Kelly at the Michael Kors event celebrating the opening of the New Robertson in 2011. Be sure to do your hair and makeup so that you can really picture yourself in the dress on your wedding day.

Wedding registry

Although much can be done online, registering for gifts often involves a lot of walking around stores, so be sure to wear something comfortable, but chic. Try this on for size: Julianne Hough wore army green high-waisted shorts and a flowing top while kicking off the voting campaign for “Hero Dog Awards” at VA Medical Centre in 2011.

Hair appointment

To plan the perfect locks for your wedding, meet with your hairstylist long before the wedding to decide your hairstyle. Ashley Greene, pictured at the Summit Entertainment Comic-Con Party in 2011, wears a casual black t-shirt and skinny jeans, paired with peep-toe black heels. This is the perfect outfit to wear getting your hair done; it's important to have a shirt with a wide neck so that you can easily change clothes without messing up your do.

Spa day

Take a break from all that wedding planning and treat yourself and your maid of honor to a spa day. Wear something stress-free, such as a sundress that is cute but takes no effort – after all, this day is all about relaxing. Kaley Cuoco wore this black and white striped dress to Comic-Con Fandemonium in 2010.

Hen night

When it’s time for you and your girls to have a night on the town for your Hen night, wear something that will catch everyone’s eye! Dazzle your friends and everyone you meet in a sequined dress like Taylor Swift’s strapless gold sheath at the 2011 Vanity Fair Oscar Party.

Trip to the courthouse

Heading to the courthouse with your fiancé to get your marriage license is an exciting moment. Take a note from Lauren Conrad and wear a chic outfit like her's at the Skyrim Official Launch Party in 2011. Add a fitted blazer for a professional, but trendy look.

Rehearsal dinner

The rehearsal dinner is the last event before the big day. We love Blake Lively’s shades of white dress worn at Anna Sui’s "Gossip Girl" Collection Debut at Target in 2009. Even though wearing white is not required -- feel free to wear something bright and add a pop of color to your bridal party -- opt for a class style dress since there will be many family photos. At this point, you're almost to the big day. Tame your pre-wedding butterflies and don’t forget to breathe.

You made it! Pack your bags and enjoy your holiday. After the big day there's only one more crucial outfit -- what you wear on the way to the honeymoon. Show off your newlywed glow with a trendy outfit like Shenae Grimes chic hat and pleated skirt worn at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic in 2011. Happy honeymooning!
