Bicarbonate of soda or baking soda has several uses in the smoker's household. Just a small pile of baking soda strategically placed can trap odour, reduce fire risk and clean the mess left behind.

1

Stink Eliminator

Baking soda is an alkaline which is known for its odour stopping abilities. Filling the bottom of an ashtray with baking soda helps to eliminate smoke smells from a room. The layer of soda traps the smoke from the ashes and discarded butts.

2

Fire Stopper

Baking soda also has an excellent reputation for putting out fires. Baking soda will put out fires on clothing, fuel, wood, upholstery and rugs. A layer of baking soda in the bottom of ashtrays aids in completely extinguishing cigarettes.

3

Weighted Bottom

Although baking soda has a light fluffy appearance, it is in fact a dense powder. Pouring a layer of baking soda in the bottom of an ashtray will add weight to the ashtray and help prevent nasty spills.

4

Clean Up

Baking soda is a cleaning agent. Using baking soda in ashtrays aids clean-up in two ways. First the ashes and butts are laying on top of the soda and are easily dumped out. Baking soda also makes a mildly abrasive, odour eating paste. Simply sprinkle a dirty ashtray with baking soda, add a drop of water and scrub with a wet rag.
