Sony's SA-W10 active super woofer is an amplified speaker designed to exclusively reproduce bass frequencies. It features a 6.75 inch cone bass driver and a 23 watt amplifier. Sony rates it to generate bass as low as 28 hertz and to reproduce frequencies as high as 200 hertz, although most users will allow their main speakers to reproduce sound above approximately 100 hertz. The super woofer will typically sound best when located near a wall or in a corner of your room, but does not need to be located exactly between your front speakers. (p. 11, 9)

Connect the other end of the patch cord to your preamplifier, processor or receiver's "subwoofer" or "superwoofer" output. This jack will typically be located on your receiver's back panel, and could also be labelled "mono out" or "mix out". If your stereo lacks one of these outputs, use the "Speaker-Level Connection" process outlined below. (p. 5)

Connect the right speaker's wires, the other end of which should still be connected to the speaker outputs on your reciever, processor or preamplifier, to the "R" terminals for "Input 2" on the Sony SA-W10, and connect the left speaker's wires to the "L" terminals for "Input 2". To do this, simply press down on the small spring loaded lever, insert the wire, then release the lever. Be careful to keep the polarities of the wires the same, always connecting negative to negative and positive to positive. (p. 5)

Connect an additional set of speaker wires from the "Speaker" outputs on your Sony SA-W10 to your speakers. The outputs are located directly above the "Input 2" speaker terminals on the SA-W10's back panel. To connect them, press down the spring-loaded terminals and insert the wires, making sure that their ends have been stripped to show between one-half and one-inch of bare wire. Then connect the other end of the wire to the corresponding terminals on your speakers, being careful to connect the correct polarity and the correct speaker to the correct wire. (p. 5)

TIP

If you have a choice between the two connections, use the line-level method. You may need to activate your receiver's subwoofer output. Use your owner's manual to figure out the procedure.
