Making playdough is a project where kids can be involved every step along the way. Use this as an opportunity to teach them about different textures, colours, measurements and states of matter. Once the playdough is made, have the children use it to create different shapes and sculptures. Preserve these creations by baking them at 148 degrees Cor about an hour or simply place the playdough back in the airtight container to be used again later.

Combine 2 cups flour, 1 cup salt, 4 Tbsp cream of tartar and 4 Tbsp olive oil in a large bowl and mix thoroughly.

Add 2 cups of water and mix thoroughly. The mixture will be thin.

Add a few drops of food colouring and mix until the colour is evenly distributed.

Place the mixture in a large sauce pan over medium-high heat and stir until a dough begins to form.

Remove from heat and cool completely.

Knead the dough until the colour and texture is consistent throughout.

Store in an airtight container.

TIP

Wear plastic gloves to avoid staining your hands during the mixing process. Once the food colouring dries, it will no longer transfer to skin. Cream of tartar helps prolong the lifespan of the playdough, but it's not necessary for the recipe.
