A washing machine is heavier than a dryer because of the heavier tub and other parts that are necessary to make it work properly. The heavy nature of a washing machine can make it more difficult to move, especially up stairs. Whether you are changing homes or replacing an old washer with a new one, you may be required to move your washing machine up stairs. The job can be completed with the proper equipment and procedure.

  • A washing machine is heavier than a dryer because of the heavier tub and other parts that are necessary to make it work properly.

Unplug the washer's electrical cord from the wall outlet.

Trace the water supply hoses from the back of the washer to where they connect on the hot and cold shutoff valves. Turn the handles or knobs on the valves completely clockwise to discontinue water service to the washing machine.

Unscrew the hose fittings from the shutoff valves by turning them counterclockwise with a pair of slip-joint pliers.

Remove the drain hose from the drain or stationary tub and hook it over the top of the washer's control console.

Slide the bottom of an appliance dolly under the back bottom edge of the washing machine. Center the dolly on the back of the washer. Trucking the washer from the back with the dolly will mitigate damage to the cabinet that can be caused by the dolly.

Wrap the dolly strap around the washer and secure it on the other side of the dolly using the mechanism on the dolly specifically for this purpose. Ensure that the washer is securely on the dolly so it will not shift during the move.

Walk the dolly with the washer on it backward up the stairs. Lean the washer back slightly and pull the wheels on the dolly up one step at a time until you reach the top.
