The long leather, cotton or silk rope connected to a sword is called a sageo. This rope can be tied in decorative knots on the sword or used to connect the sword to the belt. You may choose between two main methods of securing the sageo to your belt. Implement the first option if you want a quick, easy method, although it can move around a lot and you may have to reposition it. The second method is a bit more intricate but it prevents excessive sliding around and can be released quickly if needed.

  • The long leather, cotton or silk rope connected to a sword is called a sageo.
  • You may choose between two main methods of securing the sageo to your belt.

Insert the sword blade under your belt, directly in the middle, near your belly button. The blade should point to the left as you do this.

Slide the blade to the left so it is sitting on your left hip. The blade should be pointing behind you and the handle pointing in front of you, parallel to the ground.

Grab the sageo and bring it above the blade, towards the back. Bring the sageo down between your belt and the blade. At this point, your blade is parallel to the ground and your sageo is pointing straight down to the ground.

  • Grab the sageo and bring it above the blade, towards the back.

Bring the sageo up and bring the end under your belt and through the top. This should be just to the left of your belly button area. The end should stick out a few inches from the belt with the rest of the sageo hanging loose between the two.

Grab the end of your sageo and hold it with the end dangling 10 inches from your hand with the rest hanging loosely from the blade.

Make a small loop at the 10-inch mark. Bring this loop under the belt and through the top a few inches, just to the right of the belly-button area of the belt.

Grab the dangling part of the sageo that is hanging between your belt and the blade and bring it up through the loop you just pulled through the belt. This will form a second loop.

  • Grab the dangling part of the sageo that is hanging between your belt and the blade and bring it up through the loop you just pulled through the belt.

Pull the long, dangling end of the sageo while you hold the second loop you made in place. Pull until snug.

TIP

With Option 2, release the sageo from the belt by simply pulling the end of the sageo quickly. With Option 1, pull the loop to release the sageo from your belt. With this method, reposition the sageo on the belt when needed.
