Chalk is manufactured out of limestone, and its traditional white form is used as a classroom tool for blackboards, in forensics and for marking out patterns on fabric. Pastel chalk carries the same manufacturing process as standard chalk; however, dyes are added to give the chalk its colour. If you or your children accidentally get pastel chalk on carpeting, it can be removed using common household items.

Vacuum the area where the pastel chalk is present as soon as possible. This will remove the chalk dust from carpet fibres, but it will not remove the pastel colour.

Combine 1 tbsp liquid dishwashing detergent with 2 cups lukewarm water. Mix the ingredients with a spoon for 30 seconds until the detergent begins to form bubbles in the water.

Dip a clean cloth into the solution and blot the area until it is moist. Continue to reapply the solution to the stain until the colour is removed.

Remove the detergent from carpet by dipping a clean kitchen sponge into 1 cup of cool water and blotting the area to remove the solution.

Dry the area by blotting with a large clean water-absorbing cloth. Vacuum the area once the excess moisture is removed.

TIP

For deep-set pastel chalk stains, spray the area with a fabric stain remover, which is available in the laundry aisle at any grocery store.

WARNING

By not treating the area swiftly you run the chance of a permanent stain, especially with white carpet.
