Kilts are the traditional Scottish dress for men and boys made of tartan wool that represents a specific Scottish clan. Today kilts have become more fashionable, coming in various patterns and colours and have become more integrated into everyday wear. To complete your ensemble, you must have kilt flashers, which are made of the same tartan material to match the kilt. Flashers hold up your kilt hose, or socks, with a band of elastic that is covered by the folded over sock.

Cut four 7.5 by 17.5 cm (3 by 7 inch) rectangles of tartan fabric, four 17.5 cm (7 inch)pieces of fusible web and four 12.5 cm (5 inch) pieces of hem tape.

Peel off one side of the fusible web and centre it on one of the tartan fabric rectangles. Iron the paper side of the web so it adheres to the fabric. The directions on the fusible web will direct you on how hot your iron should be to melt the fabric glue.

Fold the two sides of the tartan fabric so they meet in the centre, do not remove the paper side of the web yet. Press gently with the iron along the edges of the tartan fabric so you have a sharp crease.

Unfold the tartan fabric and peel off the paper. Refold and iron over the entire flash so the side of the fabric is securely adhered to the fusion web.

Place a piece of hem tape on the kilt flash so it covers the line from the two sides of tartan fabric that was folded over. Line the hem tape up with the lower edge of the flash and iron it on.

Fold the top edge of the flash 3.1 cm (1 1/4 inch). Use a sewing machine to stitch close to the edge in order to leave enough room to insert the elastic.

Cut out a triangle shape at the lower end of the flash and discard it. Repeat steps 1 to 7 on the next three flashes.

Cut two 45 cm (18 inch) lengths of elastic. Use the sewing machine to stitch the hook and loop sides of Velcro to opposite ends of one piece of elastic. Be sure that the hook is on one side of the elastic and the loop is on the other. Repeat for the second piece of elastic.
