The unique appearance of a Belfast sink can add character and charm to any kitchen layout. Rather than mounting it into standard countertop, a Belfast sink rests on a custom height cabinet and is recessed under the countertop's surface. Because of the nonstandard sizing, a custom cabinet should be built of sufficient strength to support these often heavy Belfast sinks.

Measure the total height of the Belfast sink. This sink will rest on top of the new cabinet. The height of a standard kitchen cabinets is 86.2 cm (34 1/2 inches). Determine the overall height of the new cabinet to be constructed from these dimensions. For this example we will use the average dimensions of a Belfast sink, which is just over 25 cm (10 inches) tall.

Cut the new cabinet sides and cabinet bottom from the 1.2 cm (1/2 inch) birch plywood using the table saw. The height, and width of the cabinet will be determined from the measurements of the Belfast sink. The total depth of a standard kitchen cabinet is 60 cm (24 inches). Construct a face frame from the 2.5 x 5 cm (1 x 2 inch) hardwood boards 60 cm (24 inches) wide x 50 cm (20 inches) tall using the biscuit Joiner biscuits and wood glue. Fasten the face frame to the two cabinet sides using the biscuit joiner. Fasten the bottom and the back of the cabinet to the cabinet sides and face frame using 4 cm (1 5/8 inch) all-purpose screws, biscuit Joiner, and 2.5 x 7.5 cm (1 x 3 inch) poplar boards.

Reinforce the upper surface of the cabinet by attaching 2.5 x 7.5 cm (1 x 3 inch) poplar boards along the entire length of the cabinet top from the face frame to the back of the cabinet. Screw these reinforcements in to the sides and back of the cabinet using the 4 cm (1 5/8 inch) all-purpose screws so that the wide edge of these boards are flush with the top edge of the newly instructed cabinet.

Install this cabinet in the cabinet run at the place where the Belfast sink will be located. This cabinet can be stained and finished to match the surrounding cabinets. A custom sized, matching cabinet door can often be ordered for this custom cabinet from the cabinet manufacturer which supplied the materials for the rest of the kitchen.
