Ash trees include white ash, green ash, blue ash and black ash. The ornamental specimens are found in landscapes and along streets. They grow best in rich, well-drained soil.

1

Time Frame

Ash trees average just under 1.5 feet of growth annually for the first five to 10 years, if planted as a shelterbelt tree (in a row). If you plant ornamental trees, expect them to grow two or more feet per year. Four to 6 feet per year is common.

2

Size

White ash is a large ash tree, which typically achieves heights of 50 to 80 feet. Green ash grows to an average height of 35 to 65 feet. Black ash can be 70 to 90 feet tall, and blue ash is the tallest, at an average of 100 feet tall.

Potential

Ash trees are considered to have a medium to rapid growth rate, depending on the type. If the growing conditions are just right, white ash trees have the potential to achieve heights of 125 feet if growing in moist, deep, well-drained soil. Green ash can also grow taller than expected, measuring about 80 feet at maturity.
