Signs of kidney distress, be it kidney infection or kidney stones, often manifest as symptoms of influenza, causing fever, aches and pain throughout the body.

1

Identification

Kidney stones form from a collection of waste products in the urine stream that crystallise into hard objects ranging in size from gravel or pebbles to masses as large as golf balls.

2

Significance

The majority of people experience no signs of a kidney stone until the irritant begins to move through the ureter, a tube connecting the bladder and kidney. At this point, discomfort develops.

Kidney Flu Symptoms

A kidney disorder can feel much like symptoms of the flu. As a stone attempts to pass, patients typically suffer fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, sharp pain in the back or sides (below the ribs) and pain throughout the abdomen and groin.

4

Risk Factors

According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, kidney stones often form as a result of failing to drink enough fluid (especially water), a family history of kidney stones or consuming foods high in protein and sodium.

Treatment

A doctor will help diagnose the extent of your kidney stone problem. According to the National Kidney Foundation, "In most cases, kidney stones pass without causing damage but usually not without causing a lot of pain.” More extreme conditions will require either non-invasive therapy or surgery.
