Laminated glass is designed by layering one or more sheets of polyvinyl butyral, commonly known as vinyl, between two sheets of glass and then fusing them all together. This combination of materials resists breaking, even when it comes in contact with tremendous force. Laminated glass is used to burglar proof homes and bullet proof vehicle windows, as well as for the construction of skylights in a home.

Order pre-cut and edged laminated glass panels. Be sure they are shipped and delivered in cushioned containers. Never store laminated glass with the face resting on a hard surface. Store the glass for less than 30 days in the shipping container. Do not remove the glass from the shipping container until you are ready to install it.

Handle the laminated glass panels carefully using protective gloves and safety goggles. Use a double glazed insulating unit for framing when possible to maximise the effectiveness of the sound reduction and safety properties of the laminated glass. The framing unit can be custom sized for the pane of laminated glass you purchase. Make sure the framing unit leaves room to add the face cushioning and setting blocks required to safely set laminated glass in the frame.

Provide adequate face and edge clearance for the sash the laminated glass will sit in. The glass cannot directly contact metal. Install minimum 80 shore durometer setting blocks to cradle the laminated glass, wide enough to accommodate the width of the pane and spaced so that the glass rests on the blocks. Durometer indicates a level of hardness.

Install the panels with cushioning material between the face and the frame edge. The material required will depend on the type of laminate used. Consult the manufacturer for the proper material to use. Cushion the face edge of the laminated glass against the frame to allow for thermal expansion and contraction and to keep the framing material from damaging the glass face.

Create proper weep in the frames and sashes. Any standing water or substances collecting in the frame can deteriorate the PVB vinyl material and corrode the laminated glass facing. The pane must not sit in any standing water or other liquid.

Seal the laminated glass panels in the frame with a sealant. Consult the manufacturer for the material best suited for the type of laminate you are using.
