Metacam is the brand name for the veterinary form of meloxicam. It is used to treat osteoarthritis pain in dogs. Meloxicam is available for human use under the brand name Mobic. According to the label, Metacam is not intended for human use.

Same Active Ingredient and Strength

The active ingredient in both Metacam oral suspension and the human version is meloxicam at 1.5 mg per ml. However, Mobic contains at least one inactive ingredient (xylitol) that can be fatally toxic to dogs.

Possible Side Effects

Meloxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and can cause serious side effects in some people. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal problems, including the development of ulcers. NSAIDs can also cause stroke and other adverse cardiovascular events.

Metacam Precautions

Although it appears that Metacam should have the same effect in humans as Mobic, the label warns, "Consult a physician in case of accidental ingestion by humans." What is certain, however, is that you should never give Metacam oral suspension to your cat.
