Disadvantages of Mechanical Air Conditioning Systems

In climates that are intensely hot and unbearably humid, air conditioners provide a convenient service in cooling and dehumidifying the air inside buildings to make the air more comfortable. Although there are advantages to the technological development of mechanical air conditioners, there are also numerous disadvantages to using mechanical air conditioning systems.


One disadvantage of using mechanical air conditioning systems is that the required equipment parts occupy a lot of valuable space. Ducts, pipes and tubes are required in most mechanical air conditioning systems to collect the air and then distribute the air throughout each room in the building, and thus air conditioning systems reduce the size of the floor space and ceiling space within those rooms.


Operating and managing an air conditioning system requires a lot of maintenance and effort. To sustain a proper temperature within the building, constant care must be tended to the control settings. While some air conditioning units provide one temperature throughout a building, with some systems, different temperatures are created in each room, and thus each room must be accounted for when setting the air conditioner's control settings. Many air conditioning systems also do not have an automatic shutoff system that regulates and sustains the room at a specific temperature. With these air conditioning units, whenever the temperature in a room gets either too hot or too cold, the control settings need to be changed manually. Furthermore most air conditioning systems require a seasonal changeover; every year the air conditioner system must be carefully and thoroughly cleaned or entirely replaced.


The use of mechanical air conditioners consumes a lot of energy. Constant energy is required for an air conditioner to function consistently. While in moderation this can be relatively harmless, when air conditioners are used unnecessarily or excessively, this can severely waste valuable energy resources. Additionally, energy is expensive; thus to run and maintain an air conditioning system is not only expensive due to the initial cost of the device, but it is also expensive because of the high amounts of energy that need to be consumed for the system to operate.
