A woman's figure can come from many factors such as genetics and exercise regimens. Characteristics that cannot be altered are bone structure and height. A short, petite woman with a boyish figure can don proper clothing items to look proportionate. Clothing is the great mask of long legs, short trunk or a full-figure.

Styles That Lengthen A Petite Frame

A pencil skirt just above the knee with a v-neck sweater that fits properly, not too tight, looks smashing. Too-tight clothing will take the eye to that spot, so if you carry a few extra pounds, avoid the snug sweater. The v-neck on a shirt, sweater or tunic will elongate the neck and torso. To get a more feminine figure, show a little skin with a décolleté top. Embrace the vertical lines of a shirt, trousers or skirt. Lines that run up and down will add height. Avoid thick fabrics around the waist and big belts that will cut the body in half. Use a fine chain belt to cinch in the waist to add curves.

Monochromatic Colors Elongate

Short, petite women with a boyish figure will look best in monochromatic colours. Try to get an exact colour-match for the top and the skirt or trousers. Famous actresses and models do this to slenderise their appearance and look taller. Tops with an elastic at the waist provide a feminine shape. Some tops have a tie in the back that pulls extra fabric over the hips and narrows the waist.

Footwear For Height

Some stylists in the United States don't believe petites should wear stilettos or high, chunky heels. Most European women say nay to that idea and wear stacked heels all day long. The best look is a high heel that is covered by the pant leg to extend the look of legs. Wear a black v-neck dress to the knee with high-heeled black boots for a stunning look that lengthens the body. Use a black metal belt to give the appearance of a waist.

What To Avoid And Include

Long skirts and bunching at the waist from excess fabric will shorten the body. Stay away from oversized clothing; this is very unflattering. Clothing that is too tight will accent body flaws, and draw the eyes to them. Use an interesting necklace or long scarf around the neck to keep eyes on the face. The key is to flow from head to toe without thick belts, short skirts or loose clothing without form. Choose feminine colours, and look for shirts that are tapered in the waist.
