The Dana/Spicer Model 35 is an automotive axle manufactured by Dana Corporation since 1985. Originally, the axle was made by American Motors (AMC) as the AMC-15. The first model was made in 1962 and American Motors sold its axle production equipment to Dana Corporation in 1985. Dana upgraded the rear axle and made an independent front suspension (IFS) axle and a twin traction beam (TTB) front axle.

The Dana 35 axle holds up well when used around town. The 1990s Ford Rangers, Dodge Dakotas and Durangos had Dana 35 front axles. The newer Dana rear axle is very popular in Jeeps and was common in the Jeep XJ Cherokee from 1984 through 1997. It was in the MJ Comanche from 1986 to 1992 and the YJ Wrangler from 1987 to 1995. The 1997 to 1998 Wrangler and the 1984 to 1997 Jeep Wagoneer had a Dana 35 rear axle.

Problems With Dana 35 Rear Axle

The Dana 35 became known as a weak axle when paired with tall tires with a height of 31 inches or more. Owners reported breakage with rugged use or when carrying a heavy load. In 1990, the manufacturer switched to a C clip, which did not hold up well either. This issue has been helped by the "Super 35" kit, designed to reinforce and strengthen the axle shaft. However, this hasn't always been a satisfactory solution for many owners, who prefer to trade the rear axle for a beefier, newer and more sturdy Dana 44 axle.

Differences between Dana 35 and Dana 35c Rear Axles

There are two Dana 35 rear axles: Dana 35 and Dana 35c -- "c" meaning custom. Dana shipped the incomplete axle to Chrysler, where building was finished. The two versions have different shafts, bearings and carrier. There is a "C-Clip Eliminator" kit for the Dana 35c. This axle is a bit small for challenging 4-wheeling that requires lockers and larger, rugged tires. Once larger tires are added most owners upgrade the axle.

Dana 35 Rear Axle Specs

Dana used the non-clip model from 1984 through 1989, and the axle has a 7 9/16 ring and pinion. It's a one-piece axle with a housing diameter of 2.625 inches. The stock shaft is 27 splines. The brake drums in models through 1989 are 10 inches, but the size was decreased to 9 inches in 1990. The axle width Wheel Mounting Surface (WMS) is 60.75 inches and there are 10 cover bolts.

Dana 35c Rear Axle Specs

This model was custom, meaning it was assembled by Chrysler after being shipped from the Dana factory.

Ring gear diameter is 7.562 inches.

OEM inner axle shaft spline count is 27.

There are 26 pinion splines.

Ring gear bolts are 8 and 3/8 x 24RH.

Pinion gear diameter is 1/376.

Gearing options are: 3.07, 3.31. Carrier break 3.55, 3.73, 4.10, 4.56, 4.88. The carrier break should be changed when gearing up or down past this point.

Rear axle ratios range from 3.27:1 to 4.88:1.

Carrier break 2.72:1 and 3:55 to 4.88:1.

Axle shaft diameter 1.09 inches (28mm) (30 spline).
