Introduced in 2007, crossovers offer the space of a sport utility vehicle with the gas mileage of a car. They are built on a car-like platform with a high ground clearance and give drivers car-like handling and safety, according to "Forbes" magazine. The interior of a crossover is roomy,like an SUV, with tall interiors and seating. "Forbes" made a list of the best crossovers of 2009, evaluating base price, fuel efficiency, safety ratings, horsepower and total cargo space.
The Subaru Forester is one of the least expensive crossovers on the list, with a base price of £12,996. It came in at number 10 on the list. The Forester gets an estimated 22 miles per gallon, and Edmunds says it is a top pick in the highly competitive small SUV segment. It offers all-wheel drive and plenty of cargo area.
The Mitsubishi Outlander tied with the Honda CRV at number eight on the list. It also has a low starting price around £13,247. The Outlander gets 22 miles to the gallon and can be purchased with all-wheel drive.
The second crossover at number eight is the Honda CRV. It was named one of the best small SUVs of 2009 by "Consumer Reports." It averages 23 miles to the gallon and offers many family and passenger-friendly features, like rear air vents and armrests.
The Jeep Compass, which was ranked at number seven, has a starting price of £12,411. It gets an estimated 25 miles to the gallon, one of the highest on the list, and is offered with front- or four-wheel drive.
Lexus RX Hybrid
The Lexus RX Hybrid, with a starting price of £27,352, was ranked sixth on the list. It gets an estimated 25 miles to the gallon. The Lexus is one of the more expensive crossovers, and offers features of a luxury car, such as voice recognition, a rear seat entertainment system and heated front seats.
At number five, the Toyota Rav4 starts at £13,975 and offers 24 miles to the gallon. According to Edmunds.com, the Rav4 offers balanced ride and handling and high crash test scores. It also comes with roomy second-row seating and an optional third-row seat.
The Lexus RX is fourth on the list, and offers most of the same amenities as the Hybrid except it averages 20 miles per gallon as opposed to 25. According to Forbes, it is the highest selling Lexus vehicle with a starting MSRP of £23,920.
The Ford Flex hits the list at number three, and has a unique style that you will either love or hate. Starting at £18,557, the Flex offers 19 miles to the gallon. It has some unique interior features such as SYNC voice technology and a refrigerated middle console.
The Buick Enclave tied for first place on the list. It offers 19 miles to the gallon and is one of the roomiest on the list, with 115.1 cubic feet of cargo space. It has a starting MSRP of £23,299 and has many luxury amenities like a Bose Surround Sound System, remote start and navigation.
The Ford Edge is the other first-place winner, and with a starting price of £17,312 can offer more than 260 horsepower. Despite its power, it still gets an estimated 19 miles to the gallon.
