The Britax Frontier 85 and the Britax Frontier are child safety seats that can be used forward-facing with a five-point harness or as booster seats for older kids. The Britax Frontier 85 is an updated model of the Frontier. Britax is recognised as a leading manufacturer for child car seats and passenger safety.

Features of Both Seats

The Frontier and Frontier 85 both feature a head restraint that is easy to adjust without disassembling the five-point harness. Both seats are designed to provide maximum protection to the child in the event of a crash, and include an energy-absorbing base, energy-absorbing foam liner, high-density comfort foam and side impact protection. Both seats have armrests and a plush seat cover to make them more comfortable. The Frontier and Frontier 85 both use the LATCH anchoring system; LATCH is included in all cars manufactured after September 2002 to make installing car seats easier.

Britax Frontier

The Britax Frontier was released in January 2008. The seat was designed for children up to 36.3 Kilogram using the five-point harness and up to 45.4 Kilogram in booster seat mode. The Frontier should only be used for children that weigh at least 11.3 Kilogram and are at least 2 years old. Five fabric options are available for the Frontier.

The Britax Frontier 85 hit stores in March 2010, with all of the standard features from the Frontier, plus some upgrades. Like the Frontier, the Frontier 85 should be used for children who are at least 2 years old and weigh 11.3 Kilogram or more. The Frontier 85's maximum weight, however, is 38.6 Kilogram in forward-facing mode and 54.4 Kilogram in booster mode. At the time of its release, this was the highest weight capacity of any child car seat. Another new safety feature of the Frontier 85 is the energy-absorbing "versa-tether," which slows forward movement in a crash to reduce the impact on the child. The Frontier 85 has seven fabric choices.

Safety Considerations

In September 2008, Britax issued a voluntary recall of Frontier child restraints on seats made between April 1 and Sept. 14, 2008, for models E9L54E7, E9L54H6, E9L54H7 and E9L54M6, and between April 1 and Sept. 17, 2008, on model E9L5490. The harness straps could become detached from the car seat, increasing the risk of injury in case of a crash. To correct the problem, Britax provided owners of the seats with rubber caps to secure the harness straps in place. As of December 2010, the Frontier 85 had not been subject to any recall.

Where to Buy

As of December 2010, the Britax Frontier was still available at Babies R Us stores or online at Amazon.com. The Britax Frontier 85 can be purchased at Babies R Us or Bed, Bath and Beyond stores or at online retailers such as Amazon.com, Diapers.com and AlbeeBaby.com. Both seats have a manufacturer list price of £181.9.
