Detroit Diesel is a manufacturer of diesel engines. While horsepower is the main statistic upon which most people are hung up, torque is another important characteristic of an engine's performance. Torque is the amount of pulling capacity exerted by the engine, adding to acceleration.

Peak Torque

Peak torque on the Detroit Diesel engine comes at just around 1,200rpm, generating a total of 1,550ft.-lb. of torque.

Torque at Peak Horsepower

Peak horsepower (455 horsepower) comes at 1,800rpm, at which point the engine is still generating 1,328ft.-lb. of torque.

Torque Cutoff Point

The engine's torque curve drops sharply at 1,950rpm, at which point the torque generated plummets from 1,328ft.-lb. to only around 100ft.-lb. at 2,200rpm.
