The American tradition of the prom -- a formal dance toward the end of the school year -- has gained popularity in the UK in recent years. Choosing a dinner jacket for the prom is an opportunity to be creative and expressive in your very own way. Although many men choose the traditional colours, do not let convention limit your scope. Let your colour scheme reflect your own style and personality.

Black is the classic colour for prom, and it compliments any gown. Black is sleek, classy and elegant, and you can choose from a variety of black dinner jacket styles. In addition, black looks good on any man, but it is especially flattering to light-skinned and light-eyed gentlemen. Wearing black makes most men look slim, cool and dashing. Plus, you can wear a black dinner jacket again for future formal events.

Grey, a common colour for a gentlemen at the prom, is a neutral and complements almost any gown. It is a softer look than black but can also have a neat, dashing appearance. You can purchase a grey tux in a variety of shades such as light grey, dark grey, charcoal grey and stone grey. Grey is also a very versatile colour and can be worn on various occasions after the prom. A grey dinner jacket in the right shade can suit any man, but it is very complimentary to darker-skinned gentlemen.

White, cream and ivory

White, cream and ivory dinner jackets present an elegant appearance that goes with many gowns. The white tuxedo looks dapper and makes a man appear confident, affluent and glamorous. However, you can wear a white dinner jacket on fewer occasions than a darker one, so if you choose white, you may want to rent it instead of buying it. Also, wearing white or cream also comes with the worry of getting it stained or dirty; any spots will be readily apparent on the light fabric. To complement a white jacket, you can choose darker trousers, or a dark or coloured tie or vest if you wish.

Dark and navy blues are classic colours. They can be worn on a variety of occasions and work well with a number of different gown colours. However, you may choose a lighter blue, baby blue or powder blue. The lighter blue tuxedo is bright and different; it stands out in the crowd, is original, uncommon, and a brave choice for a young man. You will have to preplan with your date to wear a lighter blue dinner jacket since you will want to coordinate it with your date's gown. Lighter blue usually goes well with pastel gown colours such as pink, peach and white. A light blue dinner jacket is a novelty, but it can be a memorable choice for a blue-eyed gentleman.

Red always stands out. A red dinner jacket signifies a bold, sexy and fearless male. Like light blue, you need to coordinate wearing a red tux with your date so as not to clash with her gown. Red dinner jackets look good with black, white, creams or a red dress in the same shade. You will find fewer additional formal occasions to wear a red tuxedo, so like the white, you may want to rent instead of buying it. Red DJs are perfect for showy, confident guys who like to enjoy themselves.

The brown dinner jacket, the second choice after black, is softer than the classic black, but just as elegant. Chocolate brown is the most popular colour, and it complements almost all gown colours. A brown tux can last a long time and can be worn to a variety of different occasions after the prom. It is stylish and sleek, but slightly different than the common black ensemble. A brown tuxedo is an ideal choice for a special type of guy.

The purple dinner jacket is a very special choice, and, according to The Tuxedo Guide, was first worn in the 1880s by writer Oscar Wilde, who wore it unabashedly with ruffled shirts and elaborate hats. The purple tux is an eye-catcher and presents a mysterious, enigmatic and bold statement. It goes well with brown, white, black and purple dresses in similar purple hues. Purple dinner jackets can present a fancy, playful and charming appearance.
