Most major corporations have a division that handles corporate charitable giving and volunteer efforts. Airlines are no different. Most major carriers give to local charities in their hub cities and to national organisations and almost any airline that offers a miles incentive plan allows for those miles to be donated to a charity for free travel.
AirTran Airways, based out of Atlanta, participates in many Atlanta based organisations and also gives to national organisations such as the Fairy Godmother Foundation, Families of Soldiers in Iraq, Partnership Against Domestic Violence, Samaritan House, Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Toys for Tots, United Negro College Fund, Wings of Hope, Captain Planet Foundation and Habitat for Humanity.
In addition to corporate sponsorship of organisations such as the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, Kids In Distress and Operation Iraqi Children, American Airlines also promotes volunteer efforts by their employees. In the past, employee groups have participated in events and fundraisers for Unicef's Change for Good and the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.
Continental provides corporate sponsorship for March of Dimes, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, United Cerebral Palsy, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Dress for Success and Make-A-Wish Foundation. Continental also has a program for customers to donate miles to March of Dimes, the American Red Cross, and the Make-A-Wish foundation, just to name a few.
Delta Airlines' community support program, Delta Force for Global Good, is an umbrella program that provides for community involvement and environmental initiatives. Delta also provides corporate sponsorship of the American Cancer Society, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Children's Miracle Network, and Habitat for Humanity.
Southwest provides corporate sponsorship of the Ronald McDonald House and also donates flights for patients and families that are travelling for medical treatment with their Medical Transportation Grant Program. Southwest employees also participate in the Adopt-a-pilot mentor program, and the Community Affairs & Grass Roots team, which reaches out to small, grass roots, organisations in Southwest operated cities.
US Airways' company supported employee volunteer organisation, the US Airways Do-Crew, fosters employee participation in community programs in hub cities. They also support Puppies in Flight, which is an organisation that trains assistance dogs for airline travel. US Airways customers have the opportunity to donate their flight miles to the US Airways Miles of Hope program, which donates flights to the American Red Cross, Mercy Medical Airlift, Fisher House Foundation and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
