The Sony Bravia Surround Sound stereo system is designed for families to enjoy theatre-like sound in the comfort of their home. The system is made of several components including the surround sound amplifier that connects to your DVD or TV, a tower bass unit that will create the low deep sounds, and five small accent speakers that can be placed in the room where you will be watching the TV. If you want different speakers for the system, there are a few options.

Wireless

One of the challenges with a surround sound system and all of those speakers, is that they need wires to carry the audio signal. For families who don't have the ability to run speaker wire from the receiver to the rear speakers, Pioneer, Sony, Philips and Samsung all have wireless speaker options for surround sound systems and they will work with the Bravia system. Wireless speakers use a transmitter to send out electrical signals from the surround sound receiver. The speakers receive these signals and convert them into sound. Another form of transmission is through infrared signals, originating in the receiver, then transmitted to the rear speakers. The range for these systems varies by manufacturer, but in most cases they will work up to 300 feet away, according to the website, Wireless Speakers.

In-Wall Systems

If you don't know where to place those small access speakers, you can consider installing them in the wall or in the ceiling. There many companies including Channel Vision, Boston Acoustics and Jamo that produce inwall and ceiling mount speakers. The big advantage is the ability to hide the wires; the drawback is when you want to move to a new home and have to leave the speakers behind. Any time you are renovating your home and have an opportunity to run speaker wire through the exposed wall studs, it would be a good idea to do so. Even if you don't plan to install a surround system in that room, having the wire in the walls will save you a step in the future.

Bookshelf

While they are larger than the speakers that are included with the Bravia surround sound system, bookshelf speakers are small compact speakers that usually have good sound reproduction. Manufactured in a variety of finishes from natural wood, black wood or even metal, these speakers are an option for the Sony Bravia surround sound system. Bookshelf speakers are manufactured by many different companies and are available at various price points, depending on the budget you have for your surround sound system.
