Glinda the Good Witch of the South is a character from L. Frank Baum's 1900 children's novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" and MGM's 1939 film, "The Wizard of Oz." Billie Burke plays Glinda in the film and wears a pink ball gown and a tall, stately crown. The dress style is flattering to plus-size figures. You can make a replica of Burke's dress or buy one online.

Billie Burke's Glinda dress is well suited to plus-sized figures. Burke herself was 53 when cast to play Glinda and, though she was slender, the dress's high-waisted, full skirt and fitted bodice are flattering for women with curves.

If you are creative, you can assemble a dress that is also very comfortable to wear. Get a pink long-sleeved leotard with a V-neck for your bodice. Buy a floor-length tulle crinoline for your skirt. You can get the bodice at a dance store and the skirt at a bridal salon. In all likelihood, the crinoline will be white. You can make it look pink by pinning a length of pink fabric under the top layer of tulle. Decorate the bodice and the skirt with gold and crystal rhinestones and sequins so your gown sparkles.

Your Glinda costume will be most identifiable by your accessories. Glinda wears a huge, sparkly silver crown. You could make this crown yourself with some iridescent silver poster board, rhinestones and glue. Cut out a 12-inch tall length of poster board, long enough to form into a circle that fits on your head. Trim decorative spires along the top with a pair of scissors. Bend the crown into a ring and secure it with glue. When the glue dries, glue on rhinestones around the circumference of the base and at the front.

Glinda carries a magic wand with a silver star at the tip. You can use your poster board and rhinestones to make one of these for yourself. She also wears a choker necklace with a giant golden butterfly over her neck; visit a craft store or jewellery supply store to find this item.

Hair and Makeup

In the book and movie, Glinda had thick, wavy red hair. If your hair does not match this description, get a wig. Burke wore a red wig over her naturally red hair for the film. In the movie, Glinda has deep red lips, peach-coloured cheeks and smoky eyes.

Apply a dark grey shadow to your entire lid, then line your eye in black liquid liner, top and bottom. Finish with black mascara. If you need inspiration, check out some pictures of Glinda online.
