Interview Questions for a Data Reporting Analyst

A data reporting analyst works in a variety of organisations including banks, charities and ad agencies. Employers interviewing candidates for data reporting positions must assess the education, experience and technical skills of the prospective hires. Given that analyst roles are entry-level positions, employers also expect that prospective candidates will share examples from internships, summer employment and research experience outside traditional paid employment.

Education

A data reporting analyst should hold a background in economics, statistics or business, depending on the particular position he is applying for and the specific needs of the firm. Examples of questions are, "Tell us about any academic courses you have completed that will assist you in achieving success in this position," or, "Tell us how your degree prepared you for success in this position."

Experience

An analyst role is generally an entry-level position. Many analysts will have had summer job experiences, internships and sometimes, but not always, a year or two of professional, paid experience. Due to the lack of experience many candidates may present with, interview panels should use behavioural-focused questions. Focusing on how candidates acted in past positions, such as internships or summer jobs, allows interview panels an opportunity for assessing future performance. Sample questions include, "Describe a time in your working life when your data reporting skills saved an organisation money," or, "Tell us about a time you were under pressure, had a major assignment but worried about the quality of data."

Technical Knowledge

A data reporting analyst will need knowledge of the specific reporting software used by the employing company. A hiring panel should ask the candidate a detailed question about utilising the specific software such as: "Here is a list of the software our company uses. Can you tell us about two situations in which you have used each kind of program?" In some interviews, candidates may be asked to complete a testing portion of the interview whereupon they will be asked to use the software as if they were on the job.
