Sodium bicarbonate is a chemical compound that is also called baking soda. It is available over the counter and is commonly used in cooking and food preparation. Sodium bicarbonate is an antacid and is often used to counteract the ill effects of an acidic environment in your body. Besides consuming baking soda via food preparation, you can also make drinks that contain baking soda to help create a more alkaline state in your body.

Alkalising Drink

Add 1/2 to one teaspoon of baking soda to an eight ounce glass of water. Drink this at least one hour away from a meal so that it doesn't interfere with the stomach's digestive function.

Sports Drink

You can make your own healthy sports drink with some common ingredients found in your kitchen. Add one teaspoon of baking soda and one tablespoon of salt to one quart of boiled water. Add five teaspoons of sugar and a packet of unflavored kid's drink mix. Mix all of this together well until everything is dissolved and allow it to cool in the refrigerator.

Mix these ingredients well and pour over shaved ice in a highball glass.
