Concrete moulds allow a homeowner to create the look of natural stone in floors and pathways. The concrete can be left in its natural grey state or dyed to mimic the colours of stone. Molds come in a wide variety of styles that help you create the look of cobblestone, field stone, and other types of stone.

Plastic Multiple-Stone Molds

One variety of concrete mould comes in a large size, for example, 20 inches by 24 inches. This type of mould is made of strong ABS plastic and holds up to multiple uses. The mould contains a number of smaller rectangles or random stone shapes. You mix quick concrete, fill the mould, and then remove the mould when the concrete begins to set. The result is a pattern that looks like a section of a carefully laid stone path or floor. After creating as many sections as you need, you fill in the spaces with sand for outdoors or concrete grout for indoors to create a natural stone look quickly and relatively easily.

Silicone and Urethane Multiple-Stone Molds

Some manufacturers sell silicone rubber or urethane moulds for creating concrete stone floors. Silicone moulds are used by professional designers to create a variety of architectural elements and are effective for concrete floors as well. The primary advantage of silicone or urethane over plastic is the flexibility of the mould. These moulds create a different look than the open-top plastic moulds.

Individual Molds

Other manufacturers produce individual stone moulds in a variety of shapes and sizes. Each mould is used to create one stone. With this type of mould, you assemble the stones to create a floor or path in the same way you would create a natural stone floor. The advantage of the concrete stone is the consistency in size and shape and the lower cost.

Concrete stones can be coloured to look like natural stone at a fraction of the cost. Although it will take some experimenting, you can use natural colourants to create a concrete floor with the look of natural stone.
