Gift-giving requires a lot of thought, especially when you are looking for a gift for a Chinese person. There are certain gifts to avoid because they symbolise death and bad luck. However, there are many gifts that signify luck and happiness and would be perfect as gifts for your Chinese girlfriend. Chinese girls appreciate similar gifts to girls in the West--with a little twist.

Something Red

The Chinese consider red a colour that brings luck. A red belt would be a perfect gift for a Chinese girlfriend. The red in the belt brings luck, and the belt symbolises your feelings for her, implying that you want to hold her. A red silk scarf is also a gift idea. Find one with a pattern or design you think she would like. Chinese silk is one of the finest silks in the world. Avoid red handkerchiefs as handkerchiefs imply death in Chinese culture.

Jade is also considered lucky by the Chinese and represents beauty, grace, virtue and immortality. A jade bracelet, jade earrings--or both--would be appropriate gifts. Jade jewellery comes in a variety of prices, so you're sure to find something that fits your budget.

Chinese women appreciate chocolate as much as many other women. Expensive chocolate is an especially good gift if your girlfriend lives in China, as chocolate in China has historically been waxy and less tasty than its Western counterparts.

Avoid clocks. They are associated with death in China. Also, do not give her four of anything, because that number is considered bad luck in China.
