Disadvantages of instant messenger

Instant Messenger software allows people to know when you're actively on your computer. Various instant messenger software types are available, including AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo! Instant Messenger, Windows Live Messenger and ICQ. Although the software allows users to communicate with others with the click of a button, it does have its own set of disadvantages.

Other People Are Reading

No Hiding

Instant messenger software shows your friends and family when you sign on. This can be incredibly inconvenient if you are logging in to talk to one or two people but end up getting bombarded with messages from plenty of people. You can log in and be invisible, but this prevents anyone from contacting you, an undesirable effect.

Instant messaging can be distracting and lower productivity levels. You may be working on an important task and get interrupted with messages, which may throw your concentration entirely off track. This is especially true when multiple conversations are occurring at once.

Security Risks

Instant messaging software includes the capability to send files and photos with buddies. This may be convenient, but at the same time is risky if you don't know if the file is free from viruses. There is no way to know for sure that the file is safe. If file sharing is important, always set up your antivirus software to scan any incoming files before opening them.
