Basic Tools

Each job performed by an HVAC engineer will require special tools however, a set of everyday tools including screwdrivers, pliers and wrenches. Standard wire strippers and basics such as a hammer and level should all be in the HVAC engineer's tool bag.

Detecting Tools

Tracing leaks in refrigeration or heating systems is a regular task for an HVAC technician however, without the right equipment this essential task would be impossible. Kits to detect leaks are used in conjunction with special dyes for spotting coolant leaks. Detecting more dangerous leaks such as carbon monoxide or natural gas require detectors that "sniff" these specific gases using a probe.

Pumps are used to empty and fill -- charge -- air conditioning and refrigerating systems. Hazardous gasses within refrigerants need to be handled with care, and those containing chemicals should not be released into the atmosphere. Refrigerant recovery machines pump these chemicals out of cooling systems in a controlled manner and store them for proper disposal. A charging cylinder is used to refill the system and is used in conjunction with a charging meter to ensure the right amount of coolant is used.

Metalworking Tools

As an HVAC technician has to deal with metal in various forms, including pipework, metal working tools form an essential part of his tool kit. Metal snips and pipe cutters along with deburring and flaring tools, which are used to prepare tube work for soldering, are required tools. A blow torch is also required for his metalworking tasks.
